This week we visited Matua Mudflats for our Discovery Trip. We learnt that a estuary is where fresh water meets the saltwater of the ocean. We explored the area around the mudflats and saw lots of wildlife that calls the estuary its home. After lunch we got to become scientists and explore the mudflats. During this time we were able to dig and find out how different areas were affected by the salt water. Our instructor Van was an expert with the area and we enjoyed the sharing of his knowledge. Here are some images of our trip:
Amy digging in Zone 1.
Aroha locating the wildlife on our classification sheets.
Max, Jacob, and Sarah getting their hands dirty.
Van giving us instructions and boundaries.
Van showing us how to complete our survey.

Punctuation

This week in writing we have learnt about different forms of punctuation.
We have used Sheena Cameron's Punctuation Ladder to see what stage we are at. We hope to be using Step 4 and 5 punctuation in our writing.

This week in writing we have learnt about simple and compound sentences.

Simple sentences contain a noun and a verb.
e.g. Tommy went for a swim in the river.

Compound sentences contain two simple sentences joined by a connective.
e.g. Tommy went for a swim in the river, but decided to get out when it started raining
We use FANBOYS to connect the two simple sentences.
Below are some examples from Room 7:
